Behold a Pale Horse, Part 2

I’ve finally added barding to the creature that I showcased in my last blog post. With armor on, this model looks a lot more like a horse than a greyhound sort of thingy. Much of the detail work that I did on the creature’s body is now lost under its barding. I don’t know if this monster looks scarier naked or armored. I’m tempted to have both versions of the creature in the module, but I don’t know if the monster in the buff has a place in the story. We shall see.

My next blog post will feature a playable version of this creature. I hope it won’t take me long to create so I can move on to my next 3D model.

maybe make the head barding more open around the mouth to show the 'gaping maw' more clearly - this is a common feature to the models, and I'm guessing a theme you are going for , but it seems obscured with the armour on..? Might be different animated, i guess

I like the look of it, and I second Wyrin's suggestion to make the mouth more prominent--some of the armor in the front probably needs to be chopped off. Looks good, though.

I vote for both versions, only to make it easier for modders out in the world.

Heh. Ironically, the original version of this creature's helmet was short enough to show the gaping mouth. I then lengthened it to make the creature look more horse-like. Anyhow, it's a simple matter to shorten the helmet again.

I find it a bit odd it's armor seems all one piece. The way it's depicted in the drawing feels more genuine. But nice job nonetheless. I'm amazed at how you were able to pick 3D modeling up so quickly.

To be honest, I'm not entirely happy with the one-piece armor design, although I did base it on actual barding that I found while searching the 'Net. Even that armor is made of several sheets of steel riveted together, though.

I found better-looking designs in which pieces of the armor were connected to the horse's saddle, but I decided not to have a saddle on this creature -- mostly because this isn't the type of creature that accepts riders and partly because horses in NWN2 can't be ridden anyway. :P

Ultimately, I really didn't have a good feel of what barding is like, and I find that it is difficult for me to model anything I don't have a good feel for. I spent way too much time looking at pictures of barding, wondering how all the pieces connect. I eventually copped out and decided to make the creature's body armor just one piece. Sad but true.
